A Brief History of Sorority Life at Washington and Lee

In 1989, Washington and Lee opened its first sorority chapters to give undergraduate women an opportunity to participate in the Greek community.  These sororities immediately elected members to a Panhellenic Council on a rotating basis.  The original organization was comprised of three chapters: Chi Omega, Kappa Kappa Gamma, and Kappa Alpha Theta.  With the addition of Pi Beta Phi (1992) and Kappa Delta (1997), the Panhellenic Council grew to five chapters representing about eighty percent of undergraduate women. Alpha Delta Pi became the sixth sorority on Washington and Lee's campus, beginning its first recruitment during the Fall Semester of 2008.

Recent History

Panhellenic is constantly working to strengthen and enhance sorority life at Washington and Lee. From our Meet the Greeks program, encouraging cooperative interaction on the part of each sorority and interested new members, to the Day of Dialogue, designed to mobilize Greek leadership on campus around certain key issues each year, Panhellenic serves as a united voice of sorority women at Washington and Lee University.

Washington and Lee's sororities represent 77% of the female students on campus, creating an inclusive rather than exclusive Greek system, as embodied by past recruitment slogans like No Matter the Letter, We're All Greek Together! Sorority women are campus leaders who write for campus newspapers, work on important organizations like Mock Convention, Fancy Dress, GAB and Contact, participate in varsity and intramural sports, and volunteer their time for community service.
